Auto Glass Repair Made Easy with Windshield Repair Kits

There are many times that you will need to do your own auto glass repair, such as when a windshield or car window is cracked or broken. Here are the steps in using an auto glass repair kit to do your own repairs.

  1. Put some alcohol on a sponge or pad, and use it clean around the crack or break. This will get rid of any tiny glass fragments.

  2. Use a flathead screwdriver or another flat tool to clean any large chunks or slivers of glass from the crack. Be careful that you don't get glass slivers on your hands, as they can be painful and irritating. Apply more alcohol on a sponge or pad to ensure that the crack is completely clean

  3. Open the auto glass repair kit, and remove the backing side of your adhesive, which will be shaped like a doughnut. Stick it to the windshield, ensuring that the crack is directly in the center of the doughnut hole. Make sure that the adhesive is well stuck to the glass, and that it won't peel off as you work.

  4. Peel off the front of the adhesive, and gently push the pedestal part of the auto glass repair kit on the sticker so that it stands straight up.

  5. Clip the tube of resin to allow you to pour some of the liquid into the pedestal. You can use as much as ¾ of the tube to ensure that the area is sufficiently coated.

  6. Push the syringe's plunger all the way down, and place the syringe into the pedestal. Make sure the hole is airtight before pulling the plunger up. This will cause a vacuum to form, and will ensure that any air bubbles are drawn out of the crack. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes.

  7. Take out the syringe and repeat the previous step, inserting the syringe and ensuring that the seal is completely airtight. This time press the plunger down while holding the syringe, and lock it in place as far down as possible. Leave it for about 20 minutes, giving it enough time to force the resin completely into the crack.

  8. Once the time has passed, take the syringe out and use the razor that comes in the auto glass repair kit to cut the pedestal and adhesive off the glass. Make sure that you catch the resin that will drip down as you take the pedestal off, whether with paper towels or a rag.

  9. Move your car into a sunny area, and place a few more drops of the resin into the middle of the crack. Adhere the strip of plastic from the auto glass repair kit to the wet resin, use the razor to remove any air bubbles, and smooth the resin until it is even with the windshield surface.

  10. After letting the plastic sit for 15 minutes in the sun, take it off and use glass cleaner to ensure that your windshield is clean.

While these auto glass repair kits are useful, it is recommended that you get your glass repaired by professionals. The professional auto glass repair companies will ensure that the job gets done right, and will make your windshield as good as new.
