Is a car shop required to replace an illegal catalytic converter on a car?
My catalytic converter needed replacing so I took it to my local muffler tube bending shop. They put on a converter thats made for a large pickup truck, my cars a honda prelude. Cost me $400. I received a ticket for a modified exhaust, and the referee told me that my converter is illegal and needs to be replaced. Is the shop required by law to replace this?
I actually just found out today that it was illegal and one for a truck. My mechanic told me to go to this shop and all i said was i needed a catalytic converter and they said ok and gave me a new, I DID trust that it was legal.
Nope.
I just saw your other question, where you state the modifications you have done to your car.
You didn't get pulled over for the cat.
You got pulled over because you have modifications done to your car.
And, the shop didn't just randomly grab a cat converter and put it on there without you knowing.
Here's what probably happened. Your exhaust was too loud, so you asked them to replace it with something the same size. Since you have an aftermarket exhaust, they had to use a larger cat converter.
However, most aftermarket exhausts specifically say "for offroad use only". No shop is responsible for tickets that are gained by aftermarket products that they install.
You got yourself into this.
Edit: If all you did was go in, and say you need a cat converter, and didn't ask what they put in there, or look at the receipt or anything else, it's your fault for operating the car with an incorrect part.
Unless you went to a really ghetto shop that doesn't provide part numbers on their receipts. In which case, still your fault for trusting the work of such a place.
