Cash for Clunkers--Is my truck a category 2 or 3?
I have a '98 Dodge Ram 1500 4 wheel-drive with extended cab and long bed. It has a 5.9L V8 engine.
According to cars.gov, if this truck is a 'category 3' work truck, then I can only trade it in for another work truck using the gov't program. If the truck is considered a 'category 2' then I am able to purchase a passenger car...silly if you ask me, but I want to trade this truck in for a passenger car and I may not be able to get the credit, even thought the combined mpg is 14 on the truck and 28 on the new car I want to purchase.
Your truck is just a pick up, not a "Category 3" and gets 13 MPG average. You should be able to get $4,500 for any purchase for a vehicle that gets 5 MPG or better. I hope this helps to clarify.
