Speed Cameras Turned Back On
Speed cameras have been a pain to drivers for well over a decade, and some police forces fine differently. Legally you are supposed to get a ten percent waiver on a speed limit, so if you are doing thirty three miles per hour in a thirty zone you should be OK. But some police forces do not use this waiver, and fine you for breaking the speed limit at all.
But new proposals that are calling for speed cameras to be reinstated in our counties are asking that motorists escape prosecution for speeding. They will be asked to take a course if caught doing over the ten percent bracket, plus an additional nine miles per hour, and if they are caught doing a very high speed they will be asked to pay a fine, which will contribute to the maintenance of the speed cameras in the surrounding area.
The guidelines have been agreed by thirty second of the forty three police forces in the UK and these include the Manchester MET, Lincolnshire police force and Thames Valley police, and this may be due to the fact that fatal accident statistics have risen fifty percent in some of the constabularies since the turning off of speed cameras.
We know that speed enforcement does work as a deterrent to motorists." Said Superintendent Rob Povey, who heads up the road policing for Thames Valley.
Road safety unite the AA are welcoming these changes, and believe that cameras should be reinstated. In the UK we have an in depth network of over six thousand speed cameras, but the majority of them have been switched off in the last year. Fatalities fell lower than two thousand in September last year, and although campaigners felt that the cameras were more a money making scheme for local councils, the deaths are up again and police forces have now turned seventy two of them back on in the more dangerous areas of the constituencies.
