legally, can he take my car?
I am in virginia and my ex-boy friend works at a car dealership. I gave him $3000 cash to buy a car for me. I gave him the money and he bought the car in august and he had to do everything in his name (registration, tags) so he wouldn't get in trouble. Now he is threatening to take the car that I put money for everything away from me. Can he take the car away from me because it is in his name but it's my money?
He didn't try to scam me, I was just letting you know why it is in his name. I actually got a deal. Can he just have it towed or does he need to file paperwork? How long can it take to take it away if he wanted to?
Why would he have gotten in trouble for putting the car in your name? Sounds like a shady deal to me.
Yes he can take it, it is in his name. But, you could try proving your case in small claims court if he does take it. Your best bet in showing you did pay for it would be some sort of proof of the $3000... did you withdraw it from your bank account? Take out a loan? Borrow it from a friend/family member?
Also, if you have carried insurance on it in your name and not his that would be another way of helping prove your case.
