Selling a used car?
Years ago, i helped sell my father's car. Being young at the time, i didn't do any research and just went w/ the flow. I handed the buyer the title and he paid me cash. The deal was he paid me 100bucks to take it as is (it was a real junk) Few months later i get a call from the police station saying the car was in their lot and we need to pick it up. Apprently the car was dumped near a random street and it was towed to the lot. The car was still registered under my dad's name. We ended up paying big bucks to get it out and more money to junk it. What did i do wrong and what can i do to prevent getting scammed again. I need to help my dad sell his junk car again and i want to make sure i don't get scamed again. Thanks in advance!
This happened to me once also. Good thing I filed the 'Release of Liability' with the DMV and removed my name from the registration. You should've done the same.
Even if the buyer never registers the car in his own name, the release absolves me of any obligation if it's towed by the city, kills someone, used in a crime, etc. That's where you made the mistake.
