What should I do with this car?
Has been off road for a year. No tax, MOT or insurance.
Produced in summer 2000. Other similar cars on autotrader are on sale for between £300 and £2000 (but obviously, these have tax and MOT). Last time I drove it, it was in working order, but obviously that might have changed in the year it sat off road not being used.
Is the car eligible for the government scrappage deal? Should I wait for that?
Or should I sell it privately? (will anyone buy a car with no tax or MOT?)
Or should I scrap the car to a scrap yard?
In all these cases, will a buyer pick up the car themselves, as I cannot drive it without MOT, insurance or tax?
I already have another car, this car is in the way.
If it's standing after previously working fine it shouldn't have much wrong with it. The brakes may have stuck on a bit, as might the clutch (rock back and forth to free them).
If you book it in for an MoT you are legally allowed to drive to and from your appointment without a current MoT or Tax. You will need insurance cover (most policies now say "any car 3rd party" so this should be fine). £40 to check if it's a cheap pass is worth it. If it costs more than a few quid to fix, then you can sell it untested but with the failure sheet ready for budding mechanics to work from. Either way, better than scrapping it.
With an MoT it is immediately worth around £400 or more unless it looks like a bag of crap.
Only reason you should phone the scrapyard is if you are too lazy to clean it and test it and get some cash for it, or you never liked it and want rid:)
Oh, the scrappage scheme is the government making car-makers rich at our expense, and the planet's. The car makers made too many cars, built badly and priced too high, this is how we the taxpayer solve that problem. Alternatively, sell privately, keep old cars going and have a clear conscience:)
