Can I be fined for an abandoned car that I sold a year ago but the buyer never retitled?
My son's car blew it's engine. When he bought another vehicle we signed the old car over to the part time mechanic we bought the replacement car from. Because he repairs and resells cars he doessn't retitle - he just gives the title to the person he sells the car to. Whomever he sold it to never re-titled it.
Well today I got a notice in the mail that the car was found abanndoned. I can petition the court to recover the car by paying costs and fines but I don't feel I legally own it and I don't want it. Can I be fined for abanndoning it? I didn't get a bill of sale because I just gave it too the guy to scrap. I signed it over almost a year ago.
I live in Michigan.
Not if you can prove you sold it.
