Which Transmission is the cheapest?
I would like to get a used car. Most parts I can fix my self, which I'm not too worried about the prices, rebuild or from the scrap yard. What I want to know is which make and model car has price wise ($) in used or rebuild transmissions, the cheapest in dollars. For e.g: My Ford Taurus 1996, to replace it's transmission from the scrap yard would be $400. Which is pointless especially when i got the car for $500. I'm looking for a small economic car, and which the transmission from the scrap yard would not be more than $250, is that possible to find? Located in Montreal,QC, Canada.
Toyota is really big on common parts. The 1991 to 1995-ish toyotas all use roughly interchangeable parts for the inline 4 engine. The 5SFE and 3SG(T)E all occur in a ton of toyotas.
The 3SGTE is the infamous MR2 engine, the T indicates turbo while a 3SGE without a T designation is the naturally aspirated design. The 3SGE is still produced today, giving it a huge production run from 1990 to 2009 (current).
When Toyota went over to digital ignition, they kept the same head design and just put the sensor in the place the cap used to be, so don't be afraid of grabbing parts from much newer or older engines.
