How much can i get for scrap steel from a car?
I heard someone at work say scrap steel was getting $0.55 a pound. When I tried to look up prices online, I see places where it says scrap steel is $0.30-0.60 a pound. But I also see that per ton, it is $280 (which would only be $0.14 per pound). So which is it? The number I'm most interested in is what a local scrap yard is likely to pay me. The reason I need to know is that I have a junk car I am thinking about cutting up (so it wll fit in my pickup) and taking it in for scrap. Do scrap yards take that kind of metal (and it will still have paint on it)? Thanks!
Thanks for the replies. So you're saying I only get about $60 for all the metal? I have already removed the engine, transmission, and everything else so its just sheet metal thats left.
A few years ago I took in an old 80's subaru wagon, towed it there and got about $25 for it, still had the engine. I can't remember what it weighed, not a whole lot, but $0.55/lb sounds way too high!
