If I sold my car on a weekend and the DMV is not open until Monday am I still liable for anything that happen?
If I sold my car on a weekend and the DMV is not open until Monday. The buyer has paid me and I have given them my car.
Am I still liable for anything that happens over the weekend? I signed the title over and it's dated along with the Bill of Sales, but if something occurs to the car before Monday when I surrender the plates to the DMV and the Bill of Sales is notarized, am I liable?
I am in NY State and have copies of both the Title and the Bill of Sales with the Buyer's signature and date.
In Florida until the title change is registered the car is still your as is the liability. We have towed in many wrecked cars and when the title was run the person still on the title got the bill or the lean. If you sale your car take them to the DMV and have it signed over right then. Its a bad thing to go to renew your tag on your new car and find out that the guy who bought your old car has stuck you with a $500 impound bill
