Could someone help me sort out a complex question about selling car in Georgia/New Jersey?
I brought a car in February 2009 in Georgia, got it insured and registered in Georgia, then I moved to NYC, never renewed my registration and let the insurance lapsed, I parked the car in the garage until I found a buyer. Since I never paid to get my car renewed in Georgia in 2010 and 2011, do I have to pay those taxes on my car in order to convey the title to the buyer.
I live in georgia..if I'm not mistaken you will owe ga but it shouldn't be attached to the car. Ga will fine you and eventually suspend your license is your insurance has lapsed. You will also owe the state for taxes and registration. Make sure you take the tags off yor car and turn them into ga..as long as you have those tags ga will continue to charge for taxes and insurance and only you the owner can turn them in. Who has your title to the car? Sell the car and pay off your taxes and registration fee to ga and that should be the end off it.
